Terms of Use

What this site is

Award Letter is an independent, reader-funded reference on the paperwork that determines what a US college education costs — the FAFSA and other aid forms, verification, award letters, aid appeals and professional judgment, transfer credit and articulation, credit by examination, residency classification for tuition purposes, and the federal loan and billing steps around them.

It is a publication and nothing more. It is not a college, a financial aid office, a lender, a loan servicer, a scholarship provider or search service, an admissions or aid consultancy, or a government agency, and it will never become one. It has no affiliation with the US Department of Education, Federal Student Aid, the College Board, ACT, any testing organisation, any state higher education agency, or any institution mentioned on it. It receives no fee, commission, referral payment, or affiliate revenue from lenders, servicers, consultants, scholarship platforms, or schools. Nothing on this site is filed or submitted on your behalf, and no page here creates any relationship between you and the site owner beyond that of writer and reader.

No professional advice

Content here is general information, not professional advice.

Specifically, this site does not tell you how to answer any question on your own FAFSA or CSS Profile, whether you qualify as a dependent or independent student, which parent must report on your form, whether your circumstances warrant a professional judgment adjustment or whether an appeal will succeed, how much to borrow or from whom, whether a particular course will transfer, or whether you meet a state's residency test. Those determinations belong to the financial aid administrator, registrar, or residency officer at the institution holding your file, and in some cases to an attorney or tax professional. Where money, a deadline, or an appeal window is involved, contact the aid office directly and in writing.

This site takes no position on where you should apply, enrol, or borrow.

Accuracy and currency

Guides are researched against official sources and dated on publication. Even so:

  • Federal student aid rules change every award year. Formulas, thresholds, loan limits, verification selection criteria, and the forms themselves are revised on an annual cycle, and the 2026-27 cycle in particular changed how tax data reaches the form. A guide names the award year it describes; if that is not the year you are filing for, treat it as background.
  • Institutional and state rules are not uniform and are not stable. Priority deadlines, appeal procedures, transfer equivalencies, exam credit tables, and residency criteria are set by each school or state and can change between catalogues. The published source your school or state issues always outranks anything written here.
  • A guide reflects the situation at the date shown on it, not necessarily today.
  • Errors happen.

No warranty is given that content is accurate, complete, or current. If you find something wrong, please report it via the contact page — corrections are made promptly.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site owner is not liable for any loss, cost, delay, or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, anything published here — including missed deadlines, rejected applications, or expenses incurred by following a guide. You use this information at your own risk.

Advertising

This site displays advertising served by third parties, principally Google AdSense. Advertisements are selected automatically and do not constitute an endorsement of any advertised product or service. Appearance of an ad implies no relationship between the advertiser and this site. See the privacy policy for how advertising cookies work.

Because of the subject matter, ads for private lenders, refinancing companies, scholarship services, and consultants may appear on these pages. They are not recommendations, they are not reviewed or endorsed here, and no guide is written to lead you toward one. Federal aid should be exhausted before any private product is considered, and this site never receives payment for mentioning or omitting a company.

These terms may be updated. The "last updated" date above reflects the current version. Continued use of the site after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
